NEWS UPDATE: 20 APRIL 2023: Deadlines, dates for your diaries and details of initiatives that may interest you. In this issue PRME I5 Certification Scheme and Workshop Sustainability and Employability Chapter Interest Group Review of the PRME Principles PRME Global Forum Extension of Submission Date for the 2023 Doctoral Colloquium Update on Chapter Tenth Anniversary Conference Delegate Bookings PRME I5 Certification Scheme and first Workshop on 25th (3pm) or 26th (9am) April The PRME ‘Impactful Five’ (i5) Programme is an ambitious project to nurture responsible leaders by integrating collaborative, meaningful and playful learning among global leadership educators. It is funded by a three year Lego Foundation grant to PRME Global. Over the past year an Expert Pedagogy Group, including the PRME UKI Vice-Chair, Natascha Radclyffe-Thomas, has been working with a team from Harvard University on the foundational documentation and pedagogies for the i5 Programme. The PRME i5 (Impactful 5) European Expert Pedagogy Group, a subgroup of the global Pedagogy Group, have additionally worked to develop a five stage i5 Literacy Certification Scheme. You can now sign up to learn more about the pedagogic research behind the i5 program in a Stage 1 Webinar, hear from members of the i5 Expert Pedagogy Group with first-hand experience of developing the PRME Impactful Five (i5) Playbook and learn more about their experiences of implementing education for sustainable development practices in the classroom. Joining this webinar does not commit you to completing the other four stages of the scheme. Stage 1 Webinar – leading to a Certificate of i5 Attendance - (25th April at 3pm or 26th April at 9am) This is a 30 minute Webinar; offering a general project overview and outline of the i5 approach, and Q&A. Participants will develop their understanding and identify opportunities for continuous implementation by completing all Stages (in consecutive order) until i5 literacy is fully achieved in Stage 5. Certificates will be provided for attendance and for successfully completing each individual Stage. A recording of the Stage 1 webinar will be made available after the event, while Stage 2 onwards will be delivered synchronously (online/offline) only. For questions relating to i5 please contact Natascha Radclyffe-Thomas You can register for the Stage 1 Webinar here. Please note the times stated on the registration form are for the Central European Time Zone. The correct UK and Ireland times are in this announcement. Proposed Chapter Interest Group - Sustainability, Future Jobs and Graduate Employability (working title) – initial webinar on Thursday 18 May from 12-1pm PRME Global has well-established pedagogy-focused initiatives such as the Sustainability Mindset Working Group and the PRME i5 holistic leadership competencies project (see previous item). A group of colleagues at Oxford Brookes are interested in working with others to develop their thinking, teaching, research and writing on themes related to the above but that are more employment market, technology, innovation and graduate employability focused. They are interested in questions such as: What are the business sectors and thus employment markets likely to face growth, decline or transformation in coming decades as a result of sustainability imperatives, and what implications does this have for curriculum content? What are the technologies in which our students need to become proficient in order to be fit for the sustainability-oriented jobs of the future? What are the implications of the SDGs for the interdisciplinary nature of the graduate jobs of the future, and thus for the student learning of the present? Where and how do the enterprise education and ESD agendas intersect, and what are the implications for our educational offerings? How do Business Schools best engage with business sectors and industries to understand the impact of sustainability imperatives on their jobs of the future? How do developments such as these challenge traditional models of graduate employability? How do we as educators maximise the opportunities for sustainability-related placements and internships? In what time spans do we need to be acting to address the questions above? Under the auspices of the chapter, Oxford Brookes colleagues would like to test the interest of others in forming initially a loose interest group of people to explore these themes. How this might develop will depend on the level and nature of the interest shown. If interested, please join an exploratory launch webinar on Thursday 18th May from 12-1pm. This will be followed up with a further scoping and developmental session at the 2023 Tenth Anniversary Conference at Aston on 27-28 June. You can register and get a calendar link for the 18th May here. If you cannot join this event but would like to express your interest in this initiative you can email Jonathan Louw (jlouw@brookes.ac.uk) or Karen Cripps (kcripps@brookes.ac.uk) Review of the PRME Principles In case you are not on the PRME Global mailing list, we include below a recent mailing from the Secretariat in New York to all signatories about a current review and updating of the PRME principles that shape all we do. The Chapter Steering Committee encourages everyone with an interest in the future of the PRME movement to contribute to this open consultation. “The PRME Secretariat would like to formally invite you to submit feedback on the proposed new Principles for Responsible Management Education as part of PRME’s ‘Principles Refresh’. Since the Six Principles for Responsible Management Education launched in 2007, the world has significantly changed. Our PRME principles-based community has unitedly navigated through this fast-paced changing world, dealing with new and more complex challenges and contributing to cutting-edge solutions for the betterment of society and the planet. In the meantime, Responsible Management Education has moved to the spotlight of global debates as a critical factor in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To adapt them to these new realities, we assembled a PRME Principles Task Force (PPTF) composed of five members representing the key constituencies of the global PRME community. With the support of the PRME Secretariat, the PPTF has been charged with updating the Principles Framework based on the previous recommendations of the PRME SIP Review Sub-Committee and the 2015 and 2019 PRME strategic reviews, and as such, seeks your feedback. Over a four month process, the PPTF has called on the PRME Community to engage in global consultations. With your feedback, the PPTF will develop a proposal for revised PRME Principles to be formally approved at the 10th PRME Board Meeting on 12 June 2023, and officially launched during the 2023 PRME Global Forum in New York on 12-14 June 2023.” Read the updated principles here Provide your feedback here PRME Global Forum 2023 The 2023 PRME Global Forum will take place in person at Fordham University’s Gabelli School of Business on 13 – 14 June 2023. With a dynamic program and purpose-driven speakers, the 2023 Edition of the PRME Global Forum will bring a global debate on how business education can help advance the sustainable development agenda worldwide. The Global Forum is a part of a larger effort in which PRME will gather business school leaders, faculty, students, businesses, and sustainable development organizations for a Responsible Management Education Week, on 12 – 16 June 2023, in New York (USA), to advance responsible management education and its impact worldwide. In addition to taking stock of PRME’s growth over the last year and highlighting the ongoing work of the PRME community, the 2023 PRME Global Forum will focus on impact across various session themes: pedagogy, climate, digital, and leadership. The 2023 Edition will be the first in-person forum since 2017, and its plenaries will also be broadcast to participants worldwide. Welcome to our new PRME Intern – a joint appointment with UN Global Compact UK Katie Lee is our first ever Chapter PRME Intern, supporting the chapter on the PRME I5 project and coordinating communications, marketing, and live events. We hope this 50-50 joint appointment will help us achieve additional synergies between PRME and the UNGC, our UN host initiative. We would particularly like to thank Steve Kenzie (UNGC UK Executive Director) and Caterina Agnoletti (UNGC UK Operations Manager) for all their support in bringing this long-planned shared project to life. Katie is a recent graduate in 2022 from the University of Edinburgh with an MA in Sustainable Development with Politics and International Relations. Our Induction/Onboarding session for new PRME Leads On 9th March we offered our second and last onboarding session for PRME Leads in UK and Ireland signatories for this academic year. We were delighted to have some 30 people registered for the event, but if you missed it and would like to see the slide deck (also designed as an introduction to PRME for onward use in your own institution) then email the organiser, Laura Steele, on laura.steele@qub.ac.uk. These sessions will be repeated during academic year 2023-24. Congratulations once again to the winners in the 2023 PRME Innovative Pedagogy Competition The Innovative Pedagogy Competition was developed to encourage innovation, experimentation, and impact in PRME-related teaching. It also recognises the fact that financial barriers frequently exist that prevent individuals and groups from putting their ideas into practice. As the PRME UK and Ireland Chapter is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2023, the competition featured an enhanced funding pot of £8,000. In addition to an open call, specific funding was available to support the development of the ‘PRME i5’ project, an innovative global initiative by PRME in collaboration with the LEGO Foundation. We received a large number of high-quality submissions addressing a wide range of relevant issues and we thank all applicants for their effort and interest. The following projects were awarded funding and we look forward to sharing their outputs with the PRME community in due course: Open Category · Dr Karen Cripps (Oxford Brookes Business School), Cathy d’Abreu (Oxford Brookes Business School), & Dr Milena Bobeva (Bournemouth University Business School), ‘Career Building for the Sustainable Development Goals: A Co-Created Masterclass’. · Dr Ann-Christine Frandsen & Dr Anupam Mehta (Birmingham Business School), ‘Transforming Sustainability Pedagogy using Cartoon-Based Real-Life Case Studies: A Framework’. · Dr Xinwu He (Queen’s Management School), ‘Understanding Sustainable Diet and Accounting for the SDGs’. · Dr Pamela Yeow (Birkbeck, University of London), Dr Krish Saha (Birmingham City University), Dr Neil Pyper (Birkbeck, University of London), Professor Maharaj Vijay Reddy (Birmingham City University), & Christopher Cornell (Kent Country Council Coastal Waters Working Group & Southern Water Pathfinder Steering Group), ‘Marine Dumping on UK Coastlines: Raising Sustainability Awareness through a Stakeholder-Orientated Experiential Learning Approach’. PRME i5 Category · Dr Lucy Gill-Simmen (Royal Holloway University), Professor Sukanya Sen Gupta (Royal Holloway University), & Birungi Kawooya (Visiting Artist), ‘Self-Portraiture–Empowering Students to Make a Difference’. · Dr Sean Tanner, Dr Conor Drummond, Dr Helen McGrath, Dr Michael Murphy, Dr Dave Alton, & Dr Tadgh Nagle (Cork University Business School), ‘Teach, Play, Learn, Repeat’. Local Network Anniversary Year Events As part of our Anniversary year, all our 7 local networks are organising events involving students and focused on food (SDG2) in some way. Here is a report on the London and SE Local Network contribution – that culminated on 22 February at Oxford Brookes University. The London and South East network’s contribution was a three-part project on food waste. The project comprised of: · An Instagram cooking competition aimed at students and based on using commonly wasted and/or leftover food. · a hybrid expert panel discussion of community sustainable food system project partners · research carried out into hospitality businesses approaches to food waste and food rescue, by a sustainability consultant project partner The project addressed SDG 12 ‘Responsible Consumption and Production’ in examining food waste in individual and business contexts, alongside SDG 2 ‘Zero Hunger’ through highlighting the connection between food waste and money saving, in addition to communication on the role of community groups and initiatives such as food larders in enabling vulnerable people access to (healthy) food. The Instagram cooking/recipe competition was run by students for students. The competition was open to any university across London and the South East (whether or not a PRME signatory), and therefore provided extensive outreach in increasing PRME’s profile. The aim was to raise awareness and understanding of what commonly wasted foods are, and how leftovers can be creatively re-purposed. A digital cooking competition (based on video and photo entries) was fun and original. The Instagram content was designed to be informational (in relation to why food waste is a problem in terms of wasted resources), aspirational (to show how positive contributions can be made to reducing environmental impact whilst also saving money), and engaging (through recipe and resource ideas). A total of 23 entries were received, across 5 universities (Oxford Brookes, Surrey, Sussex, Middlesex and Cranfield). There were three categories of winners with £100 per winner funded by the PRME Chapter (as in other Local Network competitions). For a student TV report on the project, see here. For a full evaluation of what has been learnt from all three elements, contact the organiser, Dr Karen Cripps, on kcripps@brookes.ac.uk Latest news on our 2023 Doctoral Colloquium and Annual Conference Plans are progressing well for our 10th Anniversary Annual Conference to be held at Aston University (Birmingham) on Tuesday 27th and Wednesday 28th June 2023. As in the last two years, it will be preceded by a Doctoral Colloquium on Monday 26th June. The call for proposals for both events was issued during February. Our closing date for proposals has been extended to Monday 17th April to enable you to prepare your abstract (Doctoral Colloquium) or ideas for a workshop or paper (Conference) over the spring break. The organisers at Aston, led by Nathalie Ormrod, hope to launch the conference website and delegate/accommodation booking page in the week commencing 3rd April at the latest. 10th RME Research Conference – Lisbon, 26-28 September 2023 This 10th anniversary RME Research Conference is taking place in Lisbon, from 26th – 28th of September 2023. • PRME WELCOMES THE NEW QAA BENCHMARK STATEMENTS FOR BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT

PRME WELCOMES THE NEW QAA BENCHMARK STATEMENTS FOR BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT The PRME Chapter UK and Ireland warmly welcomes the new QAA Benchmark Statements for Business and Management Degrees (UG and PG) published on 8 March 2023. QAA Benchmark Statements are intended to articulate the standards to be expected of successful graduates in Business and Management within UK Higher Education Institutions. As such, they are critical reference points for all curriculum planning and review. The new Statements (updating the 2019 versions) significantly expand and strengthen expectations in relation to equality, diversity and inclusion, education for sustainable development, and enterprise and entrepreneurship education. The section on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is introduced as follows: 'The discipline can contribute towards the achievement of the responsible and sustainable development as described by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, partly in terms of disciplinary content, and partly via disciplinary method (see QAA and Advance HE’s Education for Sustainable Development Guidance, 2021). More specifically, Business and Management courses can draw on the UN Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) to develop the capabilities of students so that they become future generators of sustainable value for business and society as well as work towards a sustainable global economy.' Professor Petra Molthan-Hill,member of the Benchmark Review Advisory Group and Co-Chair of the PRME Working Group on Climate and the Environment has commented, 'I am so pleased that the new Statements explicitly state that sustainable management is a requirement for planetary survival and recommends that future managers and business leaders are equipped to engage meaningfully with, and respond to, climate challenges in order to embed climate solutions in all business functions and processes.' Also welcoming the new Statements, Dr Jonathan Louw, Chair of the PRME Chapter UK and Ireland, has noted that the explicit reference in the Statement to the United Nations PRME confirms the central role that PRME can play in the Business School sector's engagement with ESD. He adds, 'this will not only encourage existing PRME advocates in their endeavours but also draw the attention of Schools not yet engaged to the myriad of ways that the PRME network can support them in embedding Ethics, Responsibility and Sustainability in their curricula, research and public engagement'. The QAA Benchmark Statements can be found HERE The PRME Chapter UK and Ireland website can be found HERE The PRME Global website can be found HERE The PRME Working Group on Climate and the Environment website can be found HERE Information about the PRME Chapter UK and Ireland The PRME Chapter UK and Ireland is one of 17 Regional Chapters of the global United Nations PRME movement (established 2007). Students should be working in areas related to responsible business and management and/or the Sustainable Development Goals. Please pass this call to students and supervisors on your doctoral programmes. Deadline for abstracts: 25 April 2023, with confirmation of acceptance by 2 May 2023 Tenth Anniversary Conference UK and Ireland PRME Chapter 10 years on: Reflecting, refreshing and re-envisioning Our 10th Anniversary Conference aims to provide multiple opportunities for critical reflection on the impact that the Chapter, and UN PRME more widely, have had in promoting and embedding responsible management education over the past decade. Beyond a reflection on the past and present, the conference also seeks to encourage contributions on how to refresh and re-envision the work of PRME and RME more widely for the decade ahead. The PRME community in Ireland and the UK is marked by innovation in pedagogy and classroom practice, and the conference seeks to highlight this. But the PRME community now stretches well beyond those focused mainly on teaching and learning, and this conference also seeks to provide a platform to celebrate and engage with the many wider research programmes and traditions now recognised as intersecting with the PRME agenda. Likewise, innovative cross-sector and interdisciplinary partnerships broadly focused on the SDG agenda are also now thriving within the greater PRME community, and the conference organisers would welcome academics and practitioners willing to share their partnership journeys with a wider audience. Our more detailed Call for Proposals expands on these questions and outlines the four proposed conference tracks: (1) Responsible Management Education (2) Sustainable for-profit and non-profit organisations (3) Environmental challenges (4) Emerging sustainability challenges for business schools. Deadline for proposals: 25 April 2023, with confirmation of acceptance by 2 May 2023 Our colloquia and conferences are justifiably well-known for their friendly, open, supportive environments that nurture our community of responsible management scholars. Full conference details including delegate costs, accommodations options etc will be published during March. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in June. Our Agreement with our excellent current Secretariat hosts, Glasgow Caledonian University, will terminate shortly. They are not in a position to renew the Agreement so we are therefore looking for a new host to be in place for a 1 August 2023 start date. Applicant institutions will need to be PRME signatories as well as Chapter members. They should be in good standing with their annual financial contributions both to PRME Global and the UKI Chapter and willing to take on the role for at least a three year term. We think this is a significant opportunity for a member with the relevant infrastructure to play a key role in the health and vitality of the Chapter. It is financially remunerated so the host should not be out of pocket. Deans and PRME Leads in Chapter Member Schools have been written to separately and in more detail about our search criteria. But if you are reading this, are not in one of these roles but are positive about the opportunities acting as the Chapter Secretariat might offer your School, then please do encourage relevant colleagues to respond. Chapter Chair, Jonathan Louw, will be offering two online briefings / Q+As with potentially interested host institutions next week. After these Q+A sessions, he will enter into more detailed discussions with those HEIs still interested. Briefing on Monday 20 February at 12 noon: Register HERE Briefing on Friday 24 February at 12 noon: Register HERE Our 2023 Doctoral Colloquium and Annual Conference Our 10th Anniversary Annual Conference will be held at Aston University (Birmingham) on Tuesday 27th and Wednesday 28th June 2023. As in the last two years, it will be preceded by a Doctoral Colloquium on Monday 26th June. A call for proposals for both events will be issued in the week commencing 20 February 2023. An EAUC announcement this week has, regrettably, shown that they have picked exactly the same days as ours for their 2023 conference. We checked their website (along with those of many other organisations in our ecosystem) before announcing our dates on 26 October 2022. As our Aston hosts’ plans are now far advanced, our conference and colloquium dates will remain as planned. Reminder of Closing Dates for Research Seed Funding and Student Writing Competitions The closing date for our 7th Responsible Business and Management Student Writing Competition, Featuring prizes in UG, PG and Alternative Media categories is 28 February 2023. It is a pleasure to invite you to this very special session by Ukranian scholar Dr. Daryna Dvornichenko, for the London and South East PRME regional network. Daryna has particular links with the PRME Working Group on Business for Peace. It will be a fantastic opportunity to meet her and learn about her inspiring work and achievements in an informal atmosphere. Overview The meeting will generate discussion on women’s engagement in politics and economy before and after 24 February 2022 in Ukraine. Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 has dramatically changed the political and economic landscape as well as posed numerous challenges for the most vulnerable groups of Ukrainian society, such as women. There is a high risk of rollback of the achievements in the field of gender equality gained before 24.02.2022. As a refugee researcher, Darina will share insights from the interviews with the women politicians and entrepreneurs which she conducted before and after 24 February 2022.The meeting will provide a clear picture of the challenges women face in pre-war and post-invasion Ukraine and initiate the discussion on steps Ukraine has to take to integrate internally displaced women and external Ukrainian refugees in politics and economy. BIO: Darina Dvornichenko is a research fellow at the University of Oxford. She received her Ph.D. in political science from Odesa I. Mechnikov National University, where she also earned an M.A. and B.A. in international relations. Additionally, she earned certificates at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the European Academy of Diplomacy (Warsaw), and the British Law Centre. Before 24 February 2022, she worked as an associate professor at the National University and advisor to the head of Research Institute of Informatics and Law of the National Academy of Legal Sciences of Ukraine. She has been a guest lecturer at the University for Foreigners in Perugia, the University of Zagreb, Ukrainian Catholic University, a team lead of Jean Monnet Module “EU as a Global Actor and Agent of Change” and is the author of over 40 publications on issues of European integration and gender.
