  • Highlighting our 2022 Developing Pedagogy Competition Winners – “Finding Meaning in Self-Discovery: Fostering Inclusion through Creative Expression”

Written by Dr Lucy Gill-Simmen (RHUL) Our Developing Pedagogy competition has run since 2020 and was initiated in recognition of the financial barriers that often exist preventing individuals and groups from putting their innovative teaching ideas into practice. Dr Lucy Gill-Simmen, Professor Sukanya Sen Gupta of Royal Holloway, University of London and Visting Artist Birungi Kawooya were one of our 2022 winners in the special Impactful Five (i5) Category with their ‘Self-Portraiture – Empowering Students to Make a Difference’ project. Dr Lucy Gill-Simmen, Vice Dean for Education & Student Experience, School of Business and Management and project lead, reflects on the "Portraits of Your Future Self" workshop which was central to the project. Our recent workshop "Portraits of Your Future Self" utilised creative self-expression to provide students a welcoming and safe environment in which to explore their hopes, values, and what gives their life meaning. Through introspective artmaking and a supportive community, participants were able to connect with their authentic selves and to voice and portray their aspirations. The workshop aligns with several i5 methods. Active engagement was encouraged through open-ended creation of personal future portraits and through engagement with the facilitator. The process involved self-directed iteration and experimentation with materials towards a final product which was encouraged and discussed throughout the session amongst participants. Social interaction thus occurred organically as students reflected together on identity and goals and discussed their outputs and the meaning which underpinned them. Framing the activity around meaningful personal growth and inner wisdom activated significant learning opportunities for participants. Finally, the non-judgmental creative space prioritised student wellbeing, peace, relaxation, and finding joy in the process. Funding awarded from the Innovative Pedagogy competition allowed purchase of diverse art supplies for the session including frames, fabric and plant fibres from Uganda. These high-quality materials were crucial for spurring imagination and self-expression by providing a myriad of options and media for students to represent their desired future states. The grant also enabled hiring of a former marketing professional and now professional artist to expertly lead the workshop and to assist students in creation of meaning through their portraits. Participant reactions highlight the activity's positive impacts. One student shared that after initially feeling directionless, the process of selecting materials and playing with visual metaphors "made me think ahead, wildly not just studies, and made me stop and think about what I actually want?" Others felt "like a kid again" re-experiencing the freedom of uncomplicated creation. Multiple students described finally having "time for myself" and losing awareness of other responsibilities during the absorbing activity which reflects the characteristics of ‘flow’ leading to joy and wellbeing. The non-judgmental creative space facilitated new understandings of fellow students and an opportunity for students to open up and to connect not only with their own self but others too. Overall, the immersive self-exploration through art catalysed stress relief, connection with authentic self, optimism about personal growth, and renewed enthusiasm for learning - all whilst fostering community. These outcomes show the merits of our pedagogical approach to advance inclusion, equity, and reconciliation within business education. By valuing the inner worlds of those who may feel marginalized or out of place in typical academic classes, transformative educational experiences become possible that embrace diverse perspectives. • Lessons for the future of PRME with Carole Parkes

Written by Katie Lee (UKI PRME Intern) As the UKI PRME Chapter commemorates a decade of promoting responsible management education, we are taking the time reflect on the chapter’s impact over the last 10 years and explore how we can continue the pursuit of responsible management education. You can find these posts on our 10th Anniversary Blog Carole Parkes, our former UKI Chapter Chair from 2014 to 2017 and Emerita Professor of Responsible Management & and Leadership at the University of Winchester, has been at the forefront of the PRME movement since its foundation. At the PRME 10th Anniversary Global Forum, she was presented with a PRME Pioneer Award ‘for her leadership and commitment to the development of PRME’ and appointed a Global PRME Special Advisor. In this blog, we delve into her insights on the chapters development and her vision for the future of PRME. Carole at the PRME 10th Anniversary Global Forum in New York in July 2017 Carole described the challenges of pursuing responsible management education before the inception of PRME and its six principles in 2007. She described how "in the early 2000s, it was quite an uphill struggle”, although “I was lucky, we had a Dean that was supportive, when in so many places it wasn't really part of the agenda.” Carole worked to develop and embed social responsibility and sustainability into the business school at Aston University, including ensuring these topics were a compulsory part of the MBA programme. Carole offered her lessons for the future of PRME and the UKI Chapter. She has worked collaboratively with other PRME chapters across the globe over the past 17 years and has seen how other chapters have ensures ensured business schoolses more engage more actively engage with business esschools. "I think that's a lesson for us," she reflected, "to strengthen the Global Compact and PRME relationship in the UK and leverage it for the greater good." Since PRME’s inception, Carole has observed how sustainability has “become more desirable”, and the need to ensure PRME participation is “not a mere tick the box" activity. Carole emphasised the commitment to real change as priority for ensuring UKI PRME continues to push forward responsible management education. Carole highlights the importance of ensuring that institutions joining PRME are genuinely committed to making tangible changes in their curriculum and organizations. Looking ahead, Carole also identifies inclusivity as a continuing challenge for PRME. She believes “PRME needs to be thoughtful about how we genuinely engage with South Asia, South America, South and Sub Saharan Africa,” where remarkable initiatives are already underway. She wants to find know “how do we get all the schools around the world to want to be part of PRME.” We extend our gratitude to Carole Parkes for generously sharing her valuable insights and experiences. Her unwavering dedication and passion have played a pivotal role in driving the growth and success of PRME in the UK and Ireland. As PRME embarks on its next decade, Carole's wisdom serves as a guide forward in the pursuit of responsible management education. • Highlighting our 2022 Developing Pedagogy Competition Winners - ‘Teach, Play, Learn, Repeat’

Edited by Katie Lee (UKI PRME Intern) We were delighted to announce the launch of our 2023 PRME UK and Ireland Chapter Seed Funding Competition for Developing Innovative Pedagogic Approaches and Teaching Practices in PRME in October. Our Developing Pedagogy competition has run since 2020 and was initiated in recognition of the financial barriers that often exist preventing individuals and groups from putting their innovative teaching ideas into practice. The closing date for applications this year’s competition is the 15th December 2023. Drs Sean Tanner, Conor Drummond, Helen McGrath, Michael Murphy, Dave Alton, and Tadgh Nagle were our 2022 winners in the special Impactful Five (i5) Category with their ‘Teach, Play, Learn, Repeat’ project. We spoke to Dr Sean Tanner, project lead, on how the competition funding aided in implementing playful pedagogy at Cork University Business School. Students at Cork University Business School engaging with ‘Teach, Play, Learn Repeat’ How did ‘Teach, Play, Learn, Repeat’ use an innovative pedagogical approach to impact the learning experience? ‘Teach, Play, Learn, Repeat’ sought to adopt a more playful approach to teaching on our MSc Marketing programme in Cork University Business School, University College Cork, through a series of play-based activities and teaching interventions. The key driver of the project was to create engaged learning spaces where students could actively engage with marketing challenges in a lively and collaborative manner. The project adopted an iterative approach to play with a series of activities employing both simulative (mimicry) and competitive play elements. The project encompassed four interventions employing elements of simulative and competitive play. Simulative approaches to play involved working closely with PR and media professionals to allow students to role-play responses to hypothetical business crises. We additionally incorporated dramaturgy working with local actors to build students’ active listening skills and understanding around group dynamics, both relevant to the workplace. Play also involves rules, and using the board game Monopoly as a platform, students worked on redesigning the game to identify areas of inequity in international markets and propose potential solutions to address such issues. Students also completed a market-based ‘treasure hunt’ through the eyes of personas representing various consumer demographics with a view towards understanding of the challenges a diverse range of consumers in the community may face. How did ‘Teach, Play, Learn, Repeat’ align with the PRME i5 principles (Active Engagement, Iteration, Social Interaction, Meaningful Learning and Joy and Well-being)? During the project, the PRME i5 playbook was a fantastic resource. It helped to structure not just the teaching interventions but also our thinking around how play could be used to support our teaching. In particular, it provided a very useful lexicon to reflect on our work and how the project could be further developed to make learning Meaningful, Joyful, Social, Active and Iterative. For instance, given the novel nature of the approach, we divided the project into several events whereby we sought feedback and refined on an iterative basis. As educators, the experience afforded us a greater sense of students’ experiences, views and challenges, forcing us to also reflect on our own teaching practice. Given the participative nature of play, the activities really supported the development of class bonds and team-work. Feedback from our dramaturgy based, active listening role plays saw some very powerful reflections on the impact of dignifying others’ perspectives and worldviews. How has your team utilized the funding received from the Innovative Pedagogy competition to further advance and enhance your project? The funding provided through the initiative was hugely beneficial as it offered the teaching team the opportunity to explore alternative approaches and demonstrate a use case for future cohorts. In particular, the funding was crucial in allowing us to gain interdisciplinary perspectives and understanding of approaches. I would highly recommend anyone with an idea or teaching challenge they are trying to realise and resource to engage with the PRME pedagogy seed funding and PRME i5 Playbook. The project pushed both the students and us as educators to consider how we might learn differently. Can you share any notable student or participant feedback related to your innovative pedagogic approach, highlighting the positive impact it has had on the learning experience? The project has had a fantastic impact on class dynamics with students highlighting how they came to appreciate and learn from others’ experiences and perspectives. In particular, the playful spaces created were noted as giving the students a safe environment to make mistakes and gain learning from the experiences. Almost consistently, students noted moving outside of their comfort zone and learning more about themselves and other students and considering new ways of thinking and working: “I went into this with a negative view, but that quickly changed”. For the research team, the most positive feedback from the whole activity has been that students are asking for more of these type of activities throughout the semester. Much like the students, the project has also offered us an opportunity to learn and repeat and going forward we are looking to further embed this teaching approach into our practice to create more engaged learning spaces. We extend our thanks to Dr Sean Tanner for speaking to us on the ‘Teach, Play, Learn, Repeat’ project and hope this blog serves as inspiration for future entries. • Final Call - Chapter Webinar on Preparing for SIP 2.0 Friday 1 December at 10am, online

We are delighted to see more than 40 of you already signed up for our Sharing Information on Progress (SIP) 2.0 webinar on Friday. This is a final call in case anyone missed our previous announcements and would still like to join. Many of you will have attended the PRME Global SIP 2.0 report launch webinar in early November. From 2024, signatories will be required to complete and submit the new PRME SIP questionnaire via the PRME Commons Platform. Reporting will take place during a universal submission period, which will run from March to June each year. Our Chapter Lead on Organisational Learning and SIP Reporting, Laura Steele, will be facilitating our follow-up webinar on Friday 1 December 2023 from 10am to 11.30am. This will include an overview of the questions in the new SIP 2.0, specific consideration of the UK and Ireland context and how it may influence reporting, and a Q&A with SIP 2.0 'Early Adopters'. To book, please click here. We are aware from a recent update from PRME Global that the very final version of the new SIP 2.0 format, to be based on the updated set of Principles, is still not available. However, we are assured that there are no substantive changes in the pipeline and that the questions available here are still to be expected albeit in perhaps a different sequence. Event Two: Building Sustainability Education into the Curriculum across Disciplines at Birkbeck, University of London, Tuesday 5 December at 1pm, in-person Birkbeck is currently transforming its curriculum and looking at how it can embed environmental and sustainability education across all disciplines within the College. This is not a quick or easy transformation; we see areas where good provision already exists across the curriculum while also looking at areas where expansion in terms of the kinds of courses available will add to students' development and understanding of environment and sustainability issues. We see students as future change-makers, and so a key part of this is the development of knowledge and skills they can use in their future careers as well as their daily lives. The work in this area is being developed over the next two years by the Environmental Education Project team. The team would like to welcome members of the London & SE Local Network and the wider UK & Ireland Chapter to join in discussing our strategy and exchanging experiences on Tuesday 5 December, 1 to 3pm GMT. One Planet Leadership – Latest Developments, Call for Participants and Webinar on 5 December The Chapter is happy to bring you further news of the One Planet Leadership initiative, which emerged from our Tenth Anniversary conference in June. What follows is text provided by the One Planet Leadership team; Miriam Gage and Jonathan Gosling: We're excited to announce the launch of two new courses titled "One Planet Leadership" and invite PRME-registered schools to collaborate in their development and delivery. This idea emerged from the UK&I Chapter conference in June, and we're now forming two consortia to offer these courses, aiming to provide an international perspective on contemporary challenges for two populations: executive education participants and full-time students. We plan to launch these courses in 2024 and seek your input on advanced proposals. Both courses focus on responsible leadership as managers and citizens, addressing core PRME concerns. The first course, "One Planet Leadership: RoundTables for Experienced Managers" will be available in April 2024 online, with a possible in-person version in Mexico later in the year. If you would like to join this venture, get in touch soon. The second course, "One Planet Leadership: Choices for the Rising Generation" targets full-time students and can be integrated into existing modules. We are actively developing the details and welcome your input on the following: a) Realistic pricing, timing, duration, and faculty commitment. b) Integration into existing modules (a co-curricular experience) - what works best? c) What would you value as a consortium partner? d) Your School's participation in one or both of these. We are hosting a consultation webinar on Tuesday 5 December, 4 to 5pm GMT. You can register for the webinar or get in touch for more detailed proposals by sending an email here.
