  • 2023 Seed Funding competition for Developing Innovative Pedagogic Approaches and teaching practices

We are delighted to announce the launch of the next PRME UK and Ireland Chapter Seed Funding Competition for Developing Innovative Pedagogic Approaches and Teaching Practices in PRME. The initiative was developed in recognition of the fact that financial barriers frequently exist that prevent individuals and groups from putting their innovative ideas into practice. In a bid to help address this, awards up to the value of £1,500 are available. There is no set number of awards across the Seed Funding Competition, but rather a total funding pot of £6,000 has been established. Further information, including the application form and accompanying guidance notes, can be downloaded from the Chapter website. The closing date for applications is 15th December 2023 at 5pm. Submissions should be emailed to PRME@bcu.ac.uk. All submissions will be acknowledged. A webinar will be held on 6th November 12 noon to formally launch the Innovative Pedagogy Seed Funding Competition. In addition to discussing the application process, it will highlight projects by previous winners. For more information and to book, please click here. If you have any questions about the competition, please do not hesitate to contact Dr Claire May (cmay@lincoln.ac.uk) at Lincoln International Business School on behalf of the organisation team.

  • Birmingham City University announced as New PRME Chapter UK and Ireland Secretariat Host

We are delighted to announce that as of 2nd October 2023 our Secretariat is being hosted by Birmingham City Business School (BCBS). After an exhaustive selection process involving applicants from across our membership, we believe that BCBS is exceptionally qualified to take on this essential role in Chapter life. Without the continuity of a strong and reliable Secretariat function, our effectiveness and impact are much reduced, and we are very pleased that BCBS have shown themselves willing and able to take on the role. They take on a responsibility previously held with great success by the University of Winchester and latterly by Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU). In welcoming this outcome, Chapter Chair, Dr Jonathan Louw, thanked "all applicants, the successful team at BCBS led by Professor Maharaj Vijay Reddy, and, in particular, our superb outgoing Administrator at GCU, Bryan Hall". In further comments, he noted "That the Chapter is able to afford a part-time Secretariat is only possible because of the moral support and local fees paid by our members; all of whom are signatories to PRME in the UK and Ireland. It is heartening to know, in this milestone 10th Anniversary Year of the Chapter, that we can rely on our members in this way. I am confident that BCBS are well-positioned to help the Chapter make great progress as we head into our second decade." The Deputy Dean of Birmingham City University's Business Law and Social Science faculty, Professor Deborah Lock, has also expressed her "delight that that BCBS has become the host for the PRME Chapter secretariat", noting that . "BCBS is committed to integrating sustainability principles into the management curriculum. By hosting the secretariat, BCBS will actively engage with PRME member institutions in their work fostering sustainability- focused responsible management education for a more equitable world." In our next newsletter we shall introduce our new Administrator, Jackie Hicken, and confirm all contact details. In the meantime, our new chapter email address can be noted as PRME@bcu.ac.uk

PRME i5 Workshops On behalf of the Chapter and the i5 Expert Pedagogy Group, our Vice Chair, Natascha Radclyffe-Thomas, has already offered a number of workshops introducing the i5 responsible leadership competencies project and materials, both at our own events and at other conferences. But we know many of you would still like to get a better foundational understanding of what the i5 project is all about. The next opportunities to do so are courtesy of PRME Global, who will be running a series of workshops in September and early October. Below is a summary of what is on offer, from a recent PRME global communication: “The PRME Secretariat is thrilled to offer a new series of community training workshops for PRME Signatory Members that aim to reimagine the way education is approached to create a lasting impact on students and society. The Impactful-Five (i5) Project seeks to provide an opportunity for creative engagement with challenging subject-matter in the classroom. With these workshops PRME will be shining a spotlight on the ground-breaking work of the Impactful-Five (i5) Project and its pedagogy, and the lessons that have been learned through pilots with the Chapter-based Expert Pedagogy Members, PRME Champions, and the PRME Working Groups.“ Workshops are available on 13, 21 and 25 September and 5 October. There is a different registration link for each event, and they are all listed here. Each two hour workshop will feature the same content. Click the link here to download the i5 Playbook and please reach out to natascha.radclyffethomas@gcu.ac.uk for more information on the programme. Employability, Sustainability and Placements Webinar – 12th September from 1-2.30pm Earlier in 2023 the Chapter established a Sustainability, Employability and Jobs of the Future Interest group, on the initiative of Karen Cripps and Jonathan Louw at Oxford Brookes. The group is intended to provide a platform and network for those interested in working collaboratively and across institutions on research and good practice in these areas. It has had two foundational meetings; an exploratory webinar on May 18th and a workshop at the PRME UKI conference on 27 June. Having looked at the conference outputs, the intended next steps are: (1) a LinkedIn group to encourage information and resource exchange as well as networking between all those interested in these topics – you can join via this link. (2) a webinar on 12th September meeting for those particularly interested in working on a placements and internships project. There are three potential strands to this project: (1) gather (from our institutions and more widely) and share information about all the ways placements with an ethics/CSR/sustainability/SDG etc. agenda are currently made known to staff and students. (2) identify the Teaching and learning resources that we could generate that would encourage students preparing for or on placement to seek out, engage with and reflect on their employers' sustainability etc. commitments and practices (3) work out how to engage at a national and/or local level with employers offering placements to (a) make them aware of student demand (b) encourage them to make the sustainability etc. dimensions of available roles more explicit in their advertising. We see the PRME relationship with UNGC as an important (but by no means the only) lever in this regard. This next meeting has already been publicised to all those who attended one or both of our foundational meetings. Registration for anyone else wishing to join the webinar on 12 September is here. Read the work of our 2022/23 Student Writing Competition Winners The Chapter has run a student writing competition for the past 7 years, designed to celebrate and bring to a wider audience excellent student writing on themes of responsibility, sustainability, ethics, SDGs etc. We have now uploaded the work of 22-23 finalists and winners to our website, if they have given us permission to do so. We hope you will take a look at some of the entries and encourage entries from your own institutions when we launch our 8th competition for 23-24 in October this year. The closing date for submissions will be the end of February 2024. While congratulating last year’s winners once again, we would also like to thank our volunteer judges for all of their generous, pro bono efforts on both of the chapter and competition. Call for Collaboration – PRME Principles in PG Dissertations - Lancaster University Management School Lancaster University Management School is launching a new project Co-creating sustainable communities: Dissertation In Place, led by Professor Radka Newton and The Good Place Innovators team. The team proposes to develop an innovative, engaged and digitally enhanced dissertation framework for Postgraduate Dissertations. The project addresses the need for greater authenticity and relevance of dissertations and demonstrates a direct commitment to Lancaster’s civic commitment and responsible management education agenda. The aim is for the students to be able to work on place-based challenges identified by the project partner Groundswell Innovation that are aligned with relevant UNSDGs impacting the regional ecosystem. We are looking for inspirational practices from the PRME members who have incorporated PRME principles in postgraduate dissertations and are willing to share their learning. Please, email r.newton@lancaster.ac.uk if you wish to connect. Update on Chapter Secretariat We regret that we are still unable to confirm our future Chapter Secretariat arrangements. Many Chapter administrative functions are continuing but the one thing we are unable to do at the moment is process income or expenditure. For those needing to claim back expenses or make payments, please log your claim or other requirements with Jonathan Louw (jlouw@brookes.ac.uk) and as soon as we have a Secretariat in place we will process this. We do apologise for this delay. Chapter Local Networks In coming newsletters we shall be publicising events planned for the new academic year by our seven Local Networks across Ireland and the UK. • News Update 26.7.23 - Chapter Interim Secretariat Arrangements

Dear Members and Supporters of the PRME Chapter UK and Ireland, You will know from previous news updates that the arrangement with Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) to host our Chapter Secretariat comes to an end this month. We would like to put on record our thanks to all those at GCU who have helped to provide a flexible and responsive service since early 2020. In particular, of course, we are deeply grateful to Bryan Hall, the GCU Administrator who took on the PRME brief from the outset and has been an invaluable friend and support to the Chapter ever since. We shall miss him greatly. We are making solid progress in appointing a new Secretariat host but we are not yet in a position to make a firm announcement in this regard. Please note that our Secretariat function at GCU will cease on 27 July 2023. Over the summer, please send any Chapter enquiries to both of the following: Katie Lee – PRME Intern - on katie.lee@unglobalcompact.org.uk Jonathan Louw – Chapter Chair - on jlouw@brookes.ac.uk Between us, we shall ensure a response. However, given annual leave there may be a slight delay in doing so. We shall make an announcement about our new Secretariat hosts as soon as we are able to. We shall also circulate a farewell card to Bryan Hall in September, once everyone is back, as we know that many people have appreciated his work for the Chapter and will want to wish him well. Regards Jonathan Louw Chapter Chair Items for future news updates Local Network Co-ordinators and other event organisers, when you run a PRME event do send us details in advance and a short report afterwards (with links to any relevant resources) for wider publicity through these newsletters. • North West Network’s Sustainable Foods Event

Our 7 local networks have been commemorating 10 years of the UKI PRME in 2023 by running showcase events and student competitions on the theme of Food. Join us here on the UKI 10th Anniversary Blog with coverage from our network coordinators on their local celebrations. Crickets, mint, juices and a vertical wall of lettuces were on the menu at the sustainable foods event hosted by the North-West Local Network, in celebration of the 10-year anniversary of PRME UK & Ireland. Sponsored by Liverpool Business School (Liverpool John Moores University), the event brought together small sustainable food businesses, academic staff and the 2030hub at Cotton Exchange to share their produce and expertise with others. Credit: Annabelle Davis, LJMU Journalism student Credit:MerseyNewsLive Population growth and the need for alternative future food sources was on the mind of Wendy Johnston, an academic from Sport and Exercises Sciences. Wendy explained that we need to change our ways of thinking today and introduced us to a tasty snack of sriracha crickets, which have high protein levels- 60g in 100g of crickets. The MerseyNewsLive reporters, studying Journalism at LJMU and reporting on the event, tried the crickets and admitted themselves “perhaps surprisingly, [we] judged them to be delicious” and further reported that “several bottomless bee juices and packets of crickets later, we made our way downstairs to the lettuce wall.” Farm Urban's mission is to take a holistic, joined-up approach, embedding healthier, more nutritious and sustainable systems into the fabric of society. Their vertical living wall of lettuce in the Cotton Exchange had several types of lettuce growing, which we sampled. This living wall helps reduce food waste, as you only need to take the leaves you want for your salad. The lettuce continues to grow as it benefits from a hydroponics system. Hydroponics is one of the systems that Si Poole of Mintopia has experimented with. Mintopia is a plastic-free, organic cottage industry that collects and specialises in Mentha (Mint). With 187 types of mint and having National Plant Collection status, Si treated us to a tea tasting session with pots of tea ranging from pineapple mint to mojito mint. So knowledgeable and enthusiastic about mint, it is of no surprise that Si featured in Episode 29 of Gardener’s World 2022. The Liverpool-based Bee-Hive Juice Bar focuses on providing healthy juices to the community. Sam and Joel shared samples of their juices including ‘Flu Fighter’ (oranges, carrots, ginger and turmeric); ‘Flush’ that cleanses the liver (celery, lemon and ginger); Minty Apple (apple, mint, and ginger) and Charcoal Lemonade (lemon, maple syrup and activated charcoal). The North West Event was a fabulous half-day of food and drink tasting with small businesses, academics and students, thank you to all who attended. The MerseyNewsLive Tiktok account has also provided coverage of the event if you would like to find out more. Stay tuned for more content on the UKI PRME 10th Anniversary Blog as we delve deeper into the themes of reflection, refreshing, and re-envisioning as we celebrate 10 years of the UKI PRME Chapter. Sign up to our Newsletter and follow us on Twitter and LinkedIn to stay up to date with the chapter. Written by Dr Ann Hindley (Senior Lecturer Ethical Business and Responsible Management and PRME Co-Lead, Liverpool Business School) and edited by Katie Lee (UKI PRME Intern) The PRME Chapter UK and Ireland is one of 16 Regional Chapters of the global United Nations PRME movement (established 2007). Globally, PRME has over 800 Higher Education Institutions as signatories. Established in 2013, the UKI Chapter currently has 62 institutional members and is led by a ten person Steering Committee elected by the membership. The Chapter seeks to nurture a mutually supportive community of committed responsible management educators and researchers. Members benefit from a Chapter-wide event programme, an annual conference and doctoral colloquium, a growing set of Local Networks each with its own event schedule, and three annual, Chapter wide competitions focused on Innovative Pedagogies, Responsible Management Research and Student Writing. (Pictured below are all those present on the second morning of conference, just after the Chapter AGM). The Chapter expresses its deep appreciation to all the organisers at Aston, and in particular Nathalie Ormrod. She and her team really rose to the occasion and created many opportunities for learning, new insights and commemoration of our first decade. Thank you also to the Aston leadership team, especially Zoe Radnor, for their moral as well as financial support for the event. If you attended the conference or DC and haven’t completed our feedback survey yet, please look for the email request from Katie Lee that was sent late last week. We’d also welcome any reflections on the conference or DC to add to our Tenth Anniversary Blog – please contact Katie Lee with your contributions. Next year our conference and DC take place at the University of Exeter We were delighted to announce at Aston that our hosts next year will be the University of Exeter. Following submission of bids, the Steering Committee decided that the University of Exeter Business School proposals were best placed to shape a distinctive 2024 conference. Their future Conference Organiser, Adrian Bailey, was on hand to take on the baton from Nathalie Ormrod and provide initial insights into what awaits delegates when we all head South West to a Chapter conference for the first time. Reacting to the news, Professor Alexandra Gerbasi, Dean of the University of Exeter’s Business School, has also commented, “We are absolutely thrilled to have been selected to host the PRME UKI 2024 Conference.  Our School places environmental sustainability, responsible leadership and technological transformation at the heart of everything we do, and PRME, and its core principles, have always been key in helping us frame this mission. Building on our recent success as Times Higher Education Business School of the Year 2022, hosting the 2024 UKI PRME conference is a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase the fantastic work we are doing in the world of Responsible Management Education, and most importantly to bring together colleagues from across the sector to share best practice and foster new collaboration. We look forward to hosting delegates at our beautiful Streatham Campus in 2024 and in following in the footsteps of previous hosts in delivering a fantastic conference experience.” Note to those interested in hosting a conference in 2025 or beyond: The Chapter will run a bidding process again in early 2024 to choose our 2025 hosts. All bids will be considered against the criteria published at the time but we would particularly welcome future applications from Ireland and Wales, as all conferences to date have been held in England or Scotland. Election of PRME UK and Ireland Steering Committee (SC) Members Congratulations to the five candidates, listed below, who were recently elected for a three year term to join the Chapter SC. All bring with them a substantial track record of PRME-related work to date, and we look forward to their many further contributions in the years ahead. Both have made outstanding contributions across a wide range of PRME global and regional fora, but it is for their Chapter work that we shall inevitably miss them the most. One of Sheila’s key contributions has been in the design and oversight of our now four year old Research Seed Funding Competition. The impact of this work is now being widely felt, as our recent conferences have shown. Alex was our very effective Vice-Chair for a three year period, was instrumental in our website development and, like Sheila, has helped enhance our impact within PRME Global in so many ways. Our heartfelt thanks go to both of them, and our congratulations to Alex on his recent election to the PRME Global Board. Responsibility and authority as citizens and managers: Proposal for a collaborative module on One Planet Leadership We are pleased to draw to your attention a call for collaborators from Jonathan Gosling, probably best known tas the co-founder of the One Planet MBA at the University of Exeter in 2009/10 but with a distinguished track record of innovation in relation to responsible leadership and management education. Present at our Aston conference, and partly based on his many conversations with delegates there, he has asked us to publicise his call for PRME member schools interested, in his words, in collaborating to “…create a Module for students from each of our schools, on a world-wide basis, with a focus on the lived experiences of taking up responsibility and authority in as managers and as citizens in different parts of the world. Such a module would be built on structured peer-exchanges between students, enquiring into their current challenges and opportunities. There would be some formal input, with readings and assessments; but mostly we would work together to provide the space for conversations that are safe and enlightening; looking at how to be a citizen of the world, how to have responsibility in our own lives as well as those we manage. So in short – on responsible leadership. A tentative title is ‘One Planet Leadership’.” You are invited to make contact over the summer with a view to first gatherings of interested parties in September and October 2023. See the call for full details. PRME UKI Business and Society Research Development Workshop Series – Workshop 3 (October 13th 2023 – Bayes Business School (formerly Cass), City University of London) PRME UK and Ireland, in conjunction with partner institutions (City University London, University of Bath, University College Dublin, University of Glasgow, and University of Nottingham) is now midway through a series of five paper development workshops running between 2021-2025 to help early and mid-career scholars develop their business and society work for publication and impact. This third workshop will be hosted by the Centre for Responsible Enterprise (ETHOS) at Bayes Business School on October 13th, 2023. For full details, including the submission deadline of 1st September, see here Chapter Events Calendar If you’re organising a Chapter-related event or wanting to find out what is on, please remember to check our Chapter Events calendar. Additions can be emailed to our PRME Intern, Katie Lee on katie.lee@unglobalcompact.org.uk Items for future news updates Local Network Co-ordinators and other event organisers, when you run a PRME event do send us a short report afterwards (with links to any relevant resources) for wider publicity through these newsletters. • Proposal for a collaborative module on One Planet

Responsibility and authority as citizens and managers: Proposal for a collaborative module on One Planet Leadership Since Covid, there is less travel and integration between faculties and students across the globe; there seems to more ‘othering’ of foreigners or misfits in ‘our space’; and all this despite great efforts to encourage inclusivity and diversity. Understandably, most faculty members are too hard-pressed to get to conferences, explore speculative ideas and undertake risky research and writing with colleagues around the world. What a delight it was to meet for a few days with PRME compadres in Aston last month – because it’s so hard to get out these days! Also in decline are the impetus and opportunities for students to enjoy international educational experiences, even though worldly-wise perspectives and relationships will be crucial for many careers and certainly for sustainability transitions. But I can see nothing in the current business model of UK HE that suggests more resources (and a progressive visa regime) will be forthcoming. Other countries are not that different. So I would like to propose a collaboration amongst PRME schools that meets these challenges while encouraging a more worldly mindset: We collaborate to create a Module for students from each of our schools, on a world-wide basis, with a focus on the lived experiences of taking up responsibility and authority in as managers and as citizens in different parts of the world. A tentative title is ‘One Planet Leadership’. Each of the participating business schools (really, of course, the key faculty members with an interest in this) would come with a bunch of students to an on-line module, scheduled to work across the relevant time-zones. The faculty members would share presentations and facilitation of learning activities, and would handle the assessment (and perhaps some additional reflections and application exercises) for their own students. But the work of organising and hosting the Module would be done collaboratively. Each school would accredit the module in their own system or accept the accreditation from other members. (This can sometimes be achieved by minor revisions to an existing Module or through existing partnership agreements). There would be a modest fee to pay for the coordination and organising, which I would do though Pelumbra. I have some experience of doing this on a Module designed for people who are currently in managerial roles, mostly on Executive MBA programmes. Partner schools have been Exeter, Stellenbosch, McGill, Yokahama, Catholica de Chile, Tec de Monterrey, and more. See www.embaroundtables.com What I am proposing now is something more explicitly around the PRME Principles, and in two versions: one for managers (probably on part-time degree programmes); and one for full-time students – Masters or 3rd year undergraduates. The title? How about ‘One Planet Leadership’. If you are interested please respond soon to me and my colleague Miriam Gage on info@pelumbra.com We propose initial gatherings of interested parties on the following dates (early to suit our Asian partners): Thursday September 14th at 8:30 BST Thursday October 5th at 8:30 BST Jonathan Gosling, Emeritus Professor of Leadership, University of Exeter Director, Pelumbra Ltd. jonathan@pelumbra.com

  • South West and South Wales Local Network Event on Food, Sustainability, Business and Education

In the run up to the UK and Ireland PRME Chapter 10th Anniversary Conference and Doctoral Colloquium, our 7 local networks have been commemorating 10 years of responsible management education by running showcase events and student competitions on the theme of Food. Join us here on the UKI 10th Anniversary Blog with coverage from our network coordinators on their local celebrations The South West and South Wales PRME local came together in May 2023 to celebrate our 10th anniversary with a thought-provoking event focused on intersections between food, sustainability, business, and education. Attendees at the South West and South Wales Local Network Event on Food, Sustainability, Business and Education Tom Batten (Future Leap, Head of Consultancy) outlined motivations and objectives which drive businesses to seek his guidance and that of his team. He provided insights into the processes which businesses must go through to assess their impact, challenges relating to certification and explored what are and are not sustainable principles and practices Anna Blightman (The Assemblies, Head of Marketing) introduced attendees to the sustainability values of The Assemblies. Actions and commitments made by The Assemblies include engaging with city-wide schemes such as a new reusable cups initiative and adhering to the Green Claims Code. Anna highlighted unique challenges to sustainable hospitality such as the fact that removal of meat from some menus would not be economically viable. Faith Terry-Doyle (The SU at UWE, Student Sustainability Coordinator) and UWE students Shayla and Mo discussed the significant student demand for food-based sustainability initiatives with the UWE student community. This interest has driven and facilitated numerous highly successful events and campaigns over the past two years including: a ‘Sustainable Food For All’ campaign, creation of a recipe book and qualification opportunities for students in food hygiene. Following a coffee and cake break, attendees were prompted to use learnings from the first half of the session to engage in a critical workshop on embedding sustainability in management education. The attendees came together to come up with the following ideas, issues and actions: What should be covered in business and management education? Impact of climate change on businesses (climate anxiety, future adaptions, market shifts and career implications) The role of behaviour change in businesses (individuals, organisational, leveraging herd mentality) How to change narratives in the business world, undo ‘shareholder value’ thinking and promoting degrowth and alternative ownership models Macro-level sustainability influences (SDGs, The IPCC, nation state and city-level issues) Where are the opportunities for deepening engagement with sustainable and responsible business principles and practice? Work place and work-based integrated learning including utilising local business case studies and working with pro-bono clinics/ business advice clinics Leading by example (individually and institutionally) to encourage change, asking for transparency from senior management, ensuring buy-in from module leaders and creating opportunities which motivate and train staff members Emotional engagement with issues using art/non-academic reading e.g. Black Gold, Ministry of the Future Overall, attendees reported that the event had given them ideas for working differently and were inspired to continue to push for sustainability by the speakers’ presentations. They also shared intentions to change their modules to incorporate sustainability more prominently and share information with colleagues on the event and the SDGs. Some specific comments from attendees noted that they would consider how to challenge the status quo of the purpose for business in business schools and that it was useful to have the chance to discuss experiences with others and to learn what others are doing in the classroom.
