PRME Conference 2024

PRME Local Chapter - Midlands Event

Thursday, 15th May, 12:00 - 1:00 PM (UK time)

Authentic assessment is a pedagogical approach that emphasises real-world applications and the development of practical skills. In this presentation, we report on our use of this approach in designing and implementing new assessments for responsible business education, specifically within an undergraduate module that features a blog post assignment on sustainable consumption.

This assessment challenges students to analyse celebration-related consumption practices (e.g. gift giving, occasional meals, and home decoration) from a sustainability perspective, applying concepts from behavioural science and social practice theory, while also developing practical communication skills. Designed to promote inclusivity and reduce language barriers, the approach connects students’ personal experiences with SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), positioning them as both consumers and future business leaders.

The presentation will explore how authentic assessment can foster deeper engagement and self-reflection compared to traditional exams and essays. It will outline the theoretical foundations, structure, and benefits of the assessment, particularly in relation to student engagement and employability. Finally, we reflect on the complexities of assessing creative outputs and the implications this has for both educators and learners."

We look forward to welcoming you
