Professor Parkes received her awards at the PRME 10th Anniversary Global Forum in New York in July 2017 in recognition of her work advancing sustainability, social responsibility and values in business teaching and research in the context of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The University of Winchester Business School was a very early signatory to the Principles and hosts the PRME UK and Ireland Regional Chapter, of which Professor Parkes has been the Chair since 2014. “It’s a huge honour to be recognised in this way and I am absolutely delighted to be appointed as PRME Special Advisor for Chapters. • GCU's Dr Wersun recognised for supporting PRME initiatives

Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU)’s Dr Alec Wersun has been recognised for his leadership and commitment to Responsible Management Education (PRME) at the 2017 Global Forum celebrating ten years of the initiative. Dr Wersun, Chair-elect of the UK & Ireland Chapter of Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) and Senior Lecturer at GCU, was presented with a PRME Pioneer Award during a reception at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Dr Wersun said: “It's a great honour and recognition of my personal contribution, but one which would not have been possible without the commitment of GCU to the PRME initiative. It was amazing to collect this special award at the UN, in front of distinguished peers in the global PRME community. It was a special moment for me personally, and by extension for GCU.” The University also received a 2017 Recognition of Excellence in Reporting Award for its Sharing Information on Progress (SIP) Report. GCU also won a SIP award in 2013. Initiated by the PRME Secretariat with key support and leadership from Special Advisor Giselle Weybrecht, the SIP Recognitions have become a hallmark event during each Global Forum, intended to spotlight the most exceptional examples of SIP Reports from PRME signatories. Dr Wersun and GCU Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Pamela Gillies CBE FRSE have joined fellow leaders in helping to shape the future of business and management education, and to support the global effort to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, at the 2017 Global Forum. In 2013, GCU became the first Scottish university to join the UN Global Compact, the world’s biggest voluntary corporate responsibility partnership. GCU is also one of only 30 members of the global PRME Champions Group in recognition of its leadership role. The Global Forum is taking place on July 18 and 19 at Fordham University Lincoln Center Campus in New York.

  • Management Educators Commit to Advancing the SDGs

Over 660 business and management-related higher education institutions have made a formal declaration to become sources of thought leadership, knowledge, and innovation to advance the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The move was announced today as part of the Outcomes Declaration of the 2017 Global Forum for Responsible Management Education — 10 Years of PRME, a document adopted by acclamation from nearly 300 deans, faculty, and thought leaders in attendance during the event. It was later handed to United Nations officials during the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development. The Forum was organised by the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME), a United Nations-supported initiative that is now the largest established relationship between the UN and business schools. Convened in conjunction with the HLPF, and organised under the theme of Making Global Goals Local Business: Bringing the SDGs to Every Classroom, representatives from higher education institutions and other academic stakeholder groups noted ongoing progress within schools and through the global PRME network to advance the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Of particular note during the Forum was that despite the relative infancy of the 2030 Agenda — only in force since late 2015 — the SDGs have already become a major component of higher education institutions worldwide. With the advent of the SDGs, the PRME initiative recently updated its mission statement: realising the Sustainable Development Goals through responsible management education, reflecting the initiative’s future strategy and following the celebration of its 10th anniversary this year. The Outcomes Declaration of the 2017 PRME Global Forum underscores the commitment of PRME’s signatories — over 660 business and management schools across 83 countries — to continuously engage with the SDGs and increase their visibility in teaching, research, and thought leadership. During a high-level event in the United Nations headquarters convened by the Higher Education Sustainability Initiative, Jonas Haertle, Head of PRME, handed the Outcomes Declaration to the United Nations, reaffirming PRME’s commitment to making the SDGs a part of business and management education globally. Launched in 2007, PRME’s mission is to transform management education, research, and thought leadership globally through a framework of Six Principles. PRME has evolved from this set of Principles to becoming the largest relationship between business and management-related higher education institutions, with participation in over 80 countries and a network that reaches over 20 million students. An initiative of the United Nations Global Compact, PRME engages higher education institutions to produce the responsible leaders of the future.

The PRME Chapter UK and Ireland is delighted to announce the winners of its first Responsible Business and Management Writing Competition. Designed to highlight and celebrate the range and quality of student writing in this domain, the competition has provided vivid evidence of growing engagement with sustainability, ethics and related subjects across the business school sector. The undergraduate competition winner is Helen Mullen of Kent Business School, who impressed judges with her perspectives on how environmentally sustainable management approaches might contribute to Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives. Outlining the reasons for awarding her the top prize, Professor Carole Parkes, Chair of the UG Judging Panel and Chair of the PRME Chapter UK and Ireland, commented “This essay demonstrated a critical approach to the subject. It was well argued, used good examples to support the points made and, importantly, really engaged the reader”. Second and third prize winners were Emma Gaskill of Salford Business School and Thea Aursnes of Royal Holloway, University of London. The winner of the first prize in the postgraduate category is Eilidh Finlayson of the Glasgow School for Business and Society, for her exploration of commercialisation in the microfinance industry and how this has impacted on responsible management practices. Commenting on her winning qualities, Professor Peter Stokes, Chair of the PG Panel, said “Eilidh developed a compelling and valuable examination of the challenges for responsible management of commercialisation in micro-finance - a powerful and convincing account on this important topic”. Second and third prize winners were Caroline Johnson of Winchester Business School and Lynette Nabbosa, also of the Glasgow School for Business and Society. On behalf of the organisers, Chris Blackburn, Pro Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Oxford Brookes Business School, congratulated both prize winners and other finalists on the quality of their writing.
